Musical Theatre West
Musical Theatre West, under the direction of Executive Producer Paul Garman, was the foundation on which LAMC's live-performance infrastructure was constructed. After taking over musician contracting responsibilities in 2009, we conducted a detailed analysis of what MTW's music department requirements were as a company when it came to facilitating and managing the instrumental music component of their business and came to the conclusion that what was necessary entailed far more than simply hiring musicians. By the beginning of 2013, LAMC was operating as a turnkey music supervision solution, facilitating and managing not only all aspects of contracting, but also musical equipment and instrument rental, keyboard and electronic percussion programming, onstage musician casting, additional arrangements/orchestrations, and strategic budgeting consultation.
During the beginning years of our working relationship with MTW , and after a detailed business analysis, we concluded that when it came to facilitating and managing the instrumental component of their business, the solution would far surpass the operation of simply contracting players. Gradually (and coinciding with the official creation of Los Angeles Musicians Collective as an LLC in the State of California), LAMC's complete music supervision extended to keyboard and electronic percussion programming, musical equipment and instrument rental, onstage musician casting, additional arrangements and orchestrations, and ultimately strategic budget consultation, effectively turning LAMC into a turnkey solution for seamlessly integrating live music, whether a five-piece band or a thirty-piece orchestra, with MTW's existing business model.
Over the next five years, LAMC worked diligently alongside MTW to raise the bar of what could be expected from live theater orchestras in Southern California while simultaneously working with them to structure a budget trajectory for musician compensation that will ensure fair and viable rates for years of productions to come.
Next up for MTW is the Los Angeles regional premiere of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, running from July 11-27, 2014 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach and featuring a live, 20-piece LAMC orchestra.
